What’s New?
Breast MRI
Breast MRI is one of the newest complimentary studies to mammography and ultrasound in the diagnosis of breast cancer. Brought to MidCoast Hospital in Brunswick by Dr. Joan Sutcliffe in 2004, Breast MRI is used to further evaluate patients who have recently been diagnosed with breast cancer to help their surgeons plan appropriate surgery. Breast MRI can locate additional sites of cancer and is used for staging and follow-up of women with prior breast cancer. In 2007 the American Cancer Society began recommending yearly screening breast MRI for women with a high risk of developing breast cancer.
Breast MRI can be performed quickly and safely. The test takes about 20 minutes and requires an injection of contrast. MidCoast Hospital in Brunswick is the only hospital throughout midcoast and southern Maine performing MRI-guided breast biopsy.
