Kyphoplasty and Vertebroplasty
Kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty are minimally invasive procedures which can help correct both the pain and deformity from fractures of the spine associated with bone loss (osteoporosis), especially among older women.
Verteborplasty involves placing bone cement into the fractured vertebral bodies. This fixes the fracture and prevents motion of the fracture fragments, which is the cause of the back pain. Kyphoplasty also involves inflating small balloons inside the bone to correct the compression deformity caused by the fracture.
Both procedures can generally be done using moderate sedation where patients are groggy but awake. Occasionally general anesthesia is necessary. Often patients can return home within 3 to 4 hours following the procedure.
