Nuchal Translucency Screening

This first-trimester, noninvasive screening option available through Radiology Specialists of Maine can be exciting news for parents concerned about genetic disorders. In conjunction with our local obstetricians and the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Group in Portland, the team at Radiology Specialists of Maine has developed a new program to help screen for fetal abnormalities during an early stage of pregnancy (10 - 14 weeks). Ultrasound is used to evaluate the soft tissues behind the fetal neck, and a measurement is obtained in an area just deep to the fetal skin. This nuchal translucency measurement is correlated with the length of the fetus and maternal blood tests. If this initial screening shows an abnormality, additional invasive tests may be considered. Although this test is only one piece of the puzzle in trying to detect fetal abnormalities, a negative screening test should lead to fewer invasive diagnostic tests and greater peace of mind for all involved.

The radiologists and technologists performing the examination are certified by the National Translucency Quality Review Program.
