Uterine Fibroid Embolization

The experienced physicians at Radiology Specialists of Maine use Uterine Fibroid Embolization - a virtually non-invasive interventional radiological procedure - to treat fibroid tumors. Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) is an effective and minimally invasive way to treat symptomatic fibroids. Uterine fibroids may cause heavy menstrual bleeding, pain and pressure symptoms. This treatment uses imaging to guide a catheter into uterine artery branches. Small particles are injected through the catheter to block the small arteries that supply blood to the fibroids. The fibroids shrink, and in most cases symptoms are relieved. The embolization procedure is performed using local anesthesia and moderate sedation. Some patients may remain in the hospital overnight following the procedure, and some may elect to go home the same day. The recovery time is shorter than surgery, the uterus is not removed, and there is no general anesthesia. The procedure is performed by an experienced interventional radiologist, a physician specifically trained to perform uterine fibroid embolization and other imaging-guided procedures.
